Known limitations
TraceMind is a mature investigation product with deliberate boundaries. This page lists limitations visible in the current implementation, not a roadmap promise.
Product scope¶
| Limitation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Editor investigation tool | Built for Unity Editor workflows and Play Mode reproduction, not as a shipping-runtime analytics SDK |
| Not a Profiler replacement | Complements the Unity Profiler; focuses on selective causality and reusable playbooks |
| Selective capture | Whole-project automatic recording is intentionally avoided |
Recording and capture¶
| Limitation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Recording requires configuration | At least one tracked method/type, enabled Watch, or enabled Probe. Otherwise recording cannot start |
| Physics probes | Category toggle exists; capture definitions are not seeded, so expect no Physics lane data |
| Field watches | Many fields use Unsupported observation strategy in V1; prefer properties |
| No "All Instances" watch scope | Instance scope is This Instance or This Type only |
| Profile trade-offs | Minimal omits detail; Deep increases cost. Incomplete Causal Flow often means insufficient depth or Tracking |
| High-frequency mode | Changes representation grouping, not whether calls occurred |
| Max events per scope | Configurable cap in Preferences (default 25,000). Extremely hot scopes may truncate |
Report views (placeholders)¶
These view modes appear in the selector but are not fully implemented:
- Statistics (marked future)
- Events (marked future)
- Comparison (marked future)
Use Tree, Flow, and Timeline for production investigation work today.
Analysis surfaces¶
| Limitation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Flow minimap | Not implemented |
| Tree text filter | Filter API exists; advanced filtering not fully implemented |
| Exception Flow partial chains | May show limitation notes when callers were not tracked or event graph is unavailable |
| Causal Flow completeness | Depends on Watch, Tracking, Profile, and causal capture Preferences |
MindBoard¶
| Limitation | Detail |
|---|---|
| No automatic causality | Connection kinds are user assertions |
| Sidebar Notes tab | Scratchpad workspace; canvas Note nodes are the primary investigation notes with Markdown body support |
| Legacy node kinds | Older board items normalize to Note or Reference on load |
Scenario filters¶
Namespace, assembly, and regex filter fields on investigations exist as placeholders; rely on Tracking Editor search for precise scoping today.
Demo content¶
No demo Scenario ships inside the TraceMind package. Optional menu Tools → TraceMind → Instrumentation → Register Demo Methods requires external demo types to be loaded.
Updates¶
TraceMind Update Gate may lock tool use during forced update flows. Complete the update prompt to restore access.
