The basics¶
What is TraceMind?
A Unity Editor suite for selective causal tracing. You define a Scenario, record only what matters, then explore Reports to follow value changes back through the code and environment events that produced them.
How is this different from Debug.Log?
Logs are temporary text. TraceMind recordings are structured evidence you can reopen, filter, visualize, and pin on MindBoard, without scattering temporary instrumentation through production systems.
Does TraceMind record my whole project?
No. Selectivity is intentional. You choose Tracking targets, Watches, Probes, and Profile depth, and Preferences are designed to avoid silent whole-project capture.
Setup and usage¶
What should I configure first: Tracking or Watches?
Both, for state bugs. Tracking captures execution; Watches capture value change and unlock Causal Flow. Start with the owning type plus one symptom Watch.
Which Profile should I use?
Standard for a first look or everyday bug, Minimal when you need a tiny footprint, and Deep when nested detail is required. Raise depth only when evidence is incomplete.
Can I reuse setups across bugs?
Yes. That is what Scenarios are for. Pin and favorite the playbooks that already work, then duplicate when a sibling investigation needs a fork.
Where do recordings live?
In TraceMind's per-project database under Library/TraceMind/. Open Reports anytime, and export JSON, HTML, or Markdown when evidence must leave Unity.
MindBoard¶
What is MindBoard for?
The investigation canvas. Put references and notes together, assert relationships, use templates, and keep conclusions durable. The Sidebar adds Tasks and Sketch for developer workflow around the board.
Are MindBoard relationships automatic truth?
No. Relationships are your assertions, which keeps reasoning honest and reviewable.
Can TraceMind open my IDE from Tasks?
Yes. From the Tasks tab, double-click or use context actions to open source locations in your configured IDE when Unity can resolve the asset path.
Does Sketch persist?
Yes. Sketch strokes are stored with the MindBoard and survive tab switches, recompilation, and Editor restart.
Scope and limits¶
Is TraceMind a profiler replacement?
No. TraceMind focuses on selective investigation and causal narrative. Use the Unity Profiler for broad performance instrumentation, and TraceMind when you need scoped causality and reusable playbooks.
Does it work in player builds?
TraceMind is an Editor investigation product, built for Editor workflows and Play Mode reproduction inside Unity.
Getting help¶
How do I get help or report issues?

How does TraceMind fit with other DivinityCodes tools?
TraceMind is part of the DivinityCodes suite. Use the in-product Roadmap to see what each tool is building next, and visit divinitycodes.de for the broader catalog.
